BornLearningKC Trails

Born Learning is a national public engagement campaign, sponsored by the United Way, which seeks to help parents, caregivers and communities create early learning opportunities for young children. The Born Learning Trail is an interactive, playful and visible community engagement tool. It is designed to help parents, caregivers and communities support early learning by helping boost children’s language and literacy skills – and encouraging families to get active. Trails have been set up in local parks, zoos, museums, and indoor shopping centers across the country.

Born Learning Kansas City is currently seeking partnerships and local sponsors interested in installing and maintaining a Born Learning Trail. The proposed Born Learning Trail must be located in Cass, Clay, Jackson or Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson County, Kansas. Through this funding, partners will be provided with a starter Born Learning trail kit, which consists of a set of 10 metal activity signs (over $1,425 value). Click here to view the full contents of the kit. The signs will be localized with the name and/or logo of UWGKC, Born Learning KC and the partner agency. English and/or Spanish versions of the signs are available for each site. Our long-term goal is to have both versions at each site.

Each partner chosen will be responsible for securing a location for the trail and providing other necessary materials such as paint, painting supplies, posts for the signs, concrete to set the signs in, and additional hardware (bolts, etc.) as well as any promotional materials.  Chosen partners will also be responsible for the labor and tools needed to install the trail, such as augers or shovels and have a plan in place to maintain the trail for a minimum of five years.  Materials and maintenance can be paid for by the sponsoring agency or donated by local businesses and organizations.  If awarded, the partner agency will be required to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Way of Greater Kansas City outlining responsibilities with regard to the installation and maintenance of the trail.
